"Food recalls: FDA should be more proactive"

"If the Food and Drug Administration was more proactive, perhaps the U.S. could be spared at least some of the massive food recalls.

Being more proactive sounds logical. And that's what the Institute of Medicine strongly suggests after a study by the University of Iowa College of Public Health.

Some recalls are major produce items, from tomatoes to spinach to peanuts. Some are flavor enhancers. Some are imports that make the FDA recall list, such as frozen raw extra jumbo shrimp, packaged in 16-ounce bags -- a product of Mexico..."
