Editorial: "Food safety bill won't hurt Vt. farms"

"BRATTLEBORO -- Local and organic food advocates in Vermont say a food safety bill that passed the Senate, Tuesday, offers protections for small-scale producers, while improving the safety of the nation’s larger food system.

Both of Vermont’s senators supported the bill, which passed by a 73-25 vote.

Vermont agriculture officials were concerned with the original bill because it would have required small farmers to follow many of the requirements placed on larger producers, and the proposed changes would have cost money and made it hard to stay in business.

But last minute provisions, some of which were introduced by Vermont lawmakers, exclude small farms from some of the more onerous requirements..."
