Op-ed: "Why is food safety a partisan issue?"

"In the end, it was not the so-called 'pro-salmonella faction' that stuffed long overdue federal food safety legislation down the garbage disposal. 

Instead 'defeat' was snatched from the jaws of victory. The comprehensive $1.4 billion bill passed the Senate 73-25 last week despite efforts by opponents such as Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., who blocked it at every turn. It's what happened after the vote that should make the American public's stomachs lurch. 

Passage of the bill, touted as a great bipartisan victory in a time of political polarization, suddenly became threatened by a legislative screw-up over where the bill should have originated. The issue came to light Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the Senate vote. Before the discovery, the bill had appeared set to sail through the House and on to President Obama, who is eager to sign it into law..."
