Editorial: "Slashing budget for food safety leaves a bad taste"

"Four days before Christmas last year, lawmakers gave the country an early present, a sweeping food safety law to further ensure what we put on our plates is safe to eat.

The push for stronger government oversight came after a wave of tainted eggs, onions, lettuce, cookie dough and spinach sickened thousands of people across the country. A deadly salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter in 2009 killed at least six people.

In response came the Food Safety and Modernization Act. The bill, the first overhaul of the nation's food safety laws since the 1930s, garnered unusual bipartisan support on Capitol Hill; in fact, it cleared the Senate by unanimous voice vote. President Obama signed it into law Jan. 4..."
