Editorial: "Tainted fruit"

"The deadly Listeriosis outbreak tied to Colorado cantaloupe is unusual: Never before in the U.S. has this disease been known to spread via whole fruit, federal officials say.

Rare though the outbreak may be, its suspected roots are all too common: 'poor sanitary practices' at the processing facility.

That's the phrase the U.S. Food and Drug Administration used in a warning letter, issued last week, to Jensen Farms, which grew and packaged the 'Rocky Ford' cantaloupe implicated in at least 25 deaths.

The FDA and other experts tested Jensen's packing plant last month. The analysis 'demonstrates widespread contamination throughout your facility and indicates poor sanitary practices in the facility,' the FDA stated..."
