Editorial: "Raw need for food safety"

"A 20-state outbreak of salmonella, which includes Pennsylvania, demonstrates the pervasiveness of food-borne illness, the vast scope of the challenge to ensure safe food, and the federal government's slow pace of implementing reforms.

The salmonella outbreak was traced to yellowfin tuna consumed as sushi, and resulted in the recall of 30 tons of tuna distributed through a California seafood company.

Those sickened by the fish are among thousands of Americans who will contract a food-borne illness this year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 128,000 people are hospitalized each year for treatment of food-borne diseases, and about 3,000 die..."
