Editorial: "Food safety fixes in slow motion"

"Cantaloupes are once again in the eye of a food safety storm, linked to 140-plus cases of illness from salmonella and two deaths.

The shame of it is that the outbreak, emanating from an Indiana farm, potentially could have been prevented had the Obama administration moved in a timely fashion to implement broad food safety legislation signed into law in January 2011.

Beyond the illnesses reported in 20 states, the outbreak could have other detrimental ripple effects. We worry about how other cantaloupe producers will fare, including Colorado's Rocky Ford growers..."
