Opinion: "Food safety needs to be a priority in DC"

"People don't ordinarily think of cantaloupes as killers, but over the last two summers 32 Americans have died after eating contaminated pieces of the popular fruit.

Last year's outbreak, traced to a farm in Colorado, claimed victims ranging in age from 48 to 96, plus an unborn child whose mother miscarried. In this year's outbreak, tentatively linked to a farm in Indiana, more than 140 people have been sickened, about 30 have been hospitalized and two have died.

Over the same period as the cantaloupe outbreaks, terrorists and airline accidents claimed no lives in the USA..."
