"Food bill could boost Reid in Nevada"

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), facing a tough reelection battle back home, could curry some serious favor with Nevada voters if he moves a food safety bill, according to a recent poll.

A July study by the Make Our Food Safe coalition — compiled before a salmonella outbreak affected more than a half billion eggs and nearly 2,000 Americans — says 82 percent of Nevada voters support Senate passage of the legislation, which would make it easier for the FDA to issue food recalls.

"Nevadans have made it clear that the safety of their food is a major concern," Shelley Hearne, managing director of the Pew Health Group, said when the poll was released. "The FDA is responsible for the safety of about 80 percent of the nation's food supply and the agency needs more authority to properly protect Americans..."
