"Egg Recall Could Put Food Safety On Agenda"

"One of the largest egg recalls in the nation's history is casting new light on food safety legislation stalled in the Senate, and bill advocates hope the incident could push the chamber to take quick action when lawmakers return in September.

Over half a million eggs have been voluntarily recalled by Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms of Iowa, two of the nation's largest egg producers, after the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control tied thousands of cases of salmonella exposure to eggs produced by the companies. The pending legislation would give the FDA the authority to issue a mandatory recall of tainted products.

FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said Monday the agency was "anxious" to see the food safety legislation passed, especially in the wake of the egg recall..."
