"Egg recall didn't get food bill moving"

"Consumer advocates hoped this summer's salmonella outbreak would force the Senate to take up the stalled food-safety bill. But now Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says the Senate won't act on the legislation until after the election.

The Nevada Democrat is putting the blame on Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., who is balking at a unanimous-consent agreement to allow the Senate to take up the bill quickly. Reid said, 'In light of recent events like the egg recall in Iowa, it is unconscionable that Senator Coburn and his Republican colleagues are putting politics ahead of a common-sense, bipartisan bill to ensure that the food products our families consume every day are safe' ... "
