"Oregon hazelnut industry looks at food safety after E. coli outbreak in Midwest"

"For the first time, a potentially fatal strain of E. coli has been traced to Oregon hazelnuts, prompting the industry to take a fresh look at food safety.

The outbreak, which did not touch the Northwest, sickened at least seven people in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin in December and January. Federal and state officials traced the outbreak to Oregon, which supplies nearly all the hazelnuts in the United States. 

The E. coli outbreak -- the first involving hazelnuts -- marks a wake-up call for one of Oregon's signature industries..."
